Our 2 members in this district visited all schools during September to December 2002. In Taungoo, Karen controlled area is found in the eastern portion of the district along the border of Mutraw district. Some schools are organized and run under the Karen Education Department or local communities and are easily accessible. The remaining schools, which are usually within SPDC loci of control, are operated by villages in conjunction with SPDC officials for pragmatic reasons. In return, villagers are 'assured' by SPDC authorities that schools can be kept open. Our members noted that the majority of Karen schools are within one hour of a SPDC base which leaves them extremely vulnerable to SPDC activities. Schools are regularly forced to close as communities flee SPDC intrusions. The largest school in this district has 3 teachers and 68 students. The smallest school has 1 teacher and 6 students.

In June 2002, KTWG's Education Fund provided 52,000 Baht for schools in this district. Clik here to view distribution.

In May 2003, our education fund provied 100,000 Baht to Taungoo district schools. Click here for the June 2003 distribution report.
