Following our meeting with the Mergui-Tavoy district education officer on July 17,2002, we learned that at the moment there are only 2 open schools in the district. The majority of residents are internally displaced living in small numbers in the forest. The Karen National Union has been organizing these people to move into villages which consist of 40 homes or more. The district education officer indicated that 4 new schools would be open in the near future as new villages are settled.

KEF (through support from Alternatives for Burmese Children has supported the following schools).
