Our 3 members working in this district visited 57 schools from September to December 2002. In the delta area of this district the Burmese military are in control and insitute schools which follow their curriculum and where Burmese language is used. In the mountainous areas of this district, Karen communities retain relative autonomy and set up community-based schools where Karen is the language of instruction. SPDC views the mountainous areas as KNU controlled and thus treats local communities as the enemy. SPDC burn homes and shoot people on sight in this area. Karen run schools are seen as signifying KNU influence in the community notwithstanding the fact that communities manage and support their schools themselves. Schools are usually burnt by SPDC when SPDC moves through these areas.

Teachers from this district stated that there was a lack of textbooks, notebooks and stationnery in their classrooms. They also requested for Karen literacy training as they perceived Karen literacy rates to be very low in this region. High levels of ongoing SPDC presence in the region also meant that the language of instruction in schools was often Burmese. In June 2002, KTWG's Education Fund provided 50,000 Baht for schools in this district. Click here to see the KEF report for 2002.

In May 2003, our education fund provied 100,000 Baht to Dooplaya district schools. Click here for the June 2003 distribution report.
